Water Footprint Certification in Almería

Certification of the Water Footprint process

For the first time, a "WATER SUSTAINABILITY AND EFFICIENT IRRIGATION" certification (seal) is available to businesses, producers, and institutions. The requirements are the same as those for efficient irrigation.

The “Water Footprint” (WF) is an indicator that defines the total volume of freshwater used to produce a given product or service throughout the entire supply chain at a given place and time (directly and indirectly).

The water footprint indicator in agriculture can help establish concrete policies and actions to save water in the sector with the greatest demand for this resource.

The Water Footprint is made up of 3 types of water.

Verde

It is the volume of precipitation water that is evaporated in the production process or incorporated into the product.

Blue

It is the volume of fresh water extracted from a surface or groundwater body and that is evaporated in the production process or incorporated into the product.

Gris

It is a virtual volume of water required to dilute contaminants to the point where water quality is above acceptable standards.
